Lord Krishna’s First Lesson — The Difference Between Love and Attachment
|| श्रीकृष्ण की पहली शिक्षा — प्रेम और आसक्ति का अंतर ||
Even before taking birth on this earth, Lord Krishna taught His own mother a profound lesson—the subtle yet powerful difference between love and attachment.
Kans and his sister Devki shared a bond that appeared full of affection. Kans loved his sister so deeply that he almost worshipped her through his actions. At the time of Devki’s marriage to Vasudev, Kans personally planned every detail for his beloved sister. He ordered a magnificent chariot made of gold and silver for her wedding procession.
During the doli, Kans did something unusual. He removed his footwear and said,
“Just as we enter a temple barefoot in reverence, I too feel blessed by my sister. Therefore, I will take her doli without wearing footwear.”
With pride and devotion, Kans himself held the reins of the chariot and declared that he would personally escort his sister to her new home.
But midway through the journey, a divine prophecy echoed from the heavens:
“Kans, the eighth child of Devki will be the cause of your death.”
In that very moment, the caring brother transformed into a cruel king. The same Kans who moments ago treated his sister like a deity now dragged her by the hair, blinded by fear and attachment to his own life.
Vasudev immediately tried to calm him and said,
“Kans, you have misunderstood the prophecy. It is not Devki or me, but our eighth child who will be the cause of your death.”
Yet Kans did not listen. Consumed by attachment and insecurity, he imprisoned both Devki and Vasudev, bound them in chains, and locked them away to ensure they could never be free.
This was the very first lesson Lord Krishna gave His mother—even before His birth—the difference between love and attachment. Love is selfless, protective, and rooted in compassion. Attachment, on the other hand, is possessive, fearful, and driven by control.
Even today, we often confuse attachment with love. We bind our relationships with expectations, control, and conditions—trying to make others live according to our desires and thoughts. Through this story, Krishna reminds us that true love liberates, while attachment enslaves.
