Meera Bai’s Unshakable Devotion to Krishna
Meera, for her immense devotion and love for Krishna, was not liked by her brother-in-law Rana Vikramjit (husband’s brother). After the death of Meera Bai’s husband, Rana Vikramjit held the command of the Rajasthan kingdom.
The lifestyle of Meera Bai—walking freely in the streets without a veil and chanting Lord Krishna’s name with joy—was not liked by Rana Vikramjit. He opposed Meera, asking her to stop her devotion and activities related to Lord Krishna’s worship. He even warned her that she would lose her life if she did not stop chanting “Shyam–Shyam.”
Meera Bai fearlessly replied: “Even death will dance with my chanting of ‘Shyam–Shyam.’ You may go ahead with your doings.”
Later, Rana Vikramjit plotted many death traps for Meera.
First, he arranged for a deadly cobra from Assam, in East India, a land where the most dangerous and massive cobras are found—even some with enormous mouths that could open nearly 10 feet wide. The poison of such cobras was so deadly that if it bit an elephant, within 30 seconds the poison would spread to the brain and heart, killing the mighty animal instantly.
Rana Vikramjit summoned experts with a full team to capture such a venomous cobra and deliver it to him. This cobra was then secretly placed in Meera Bai’s room.
When Meera entered her room and saw the giant cobra on her bed with its hood raised high, her heart overflowed with divine love. She knew that her Lord Krishna was present everywhere. Folding her hands, she said with devotion:
“Hey Shesh Naag! Upon you my Lord Krishna once rode. You are ‘Kaaliya,’ upon whom my Lord danced. I know this form is none other than my Lord Shyam. You are not a snake—you are my Shyam.”
Hearing these words of pure love, the cobra could not behave as a snake. By the mercy of God, it stood still and calm. When Meera, in her deep devotion, lifted the cobra and placed it around her neck, it miraculously transformed into a garland of flowers. Such was the power of Meera’s love for Lord Krishna—it turned poison into fragrance, and danger into divine grace.
When Rana Vikramjit heard of this incident, his anger multiplied. He then conspired again, this time plotting to poison Meera.
He decided to offer Meera poison disguised as Panchamrit. Arranging a grand yajna, he called pandits to perform all rituals. Once the yajna was complete, he instructed his men to mix deadly poison into the Panchamrit prepared with curd, honey, and other offerings meant for Lord Krishna, and then present it to Meera Bai as prasadam.
When the yajna ended, the pandits, as per the king’s conspiracy, took the poisoned Panchamrit to Meera and said:
“Meera, this is Panchamrit from the feet of Lord Krishna. Please accept it.”
Overjoyed, Meera Bai immediately drank it with devotion. But the moment the Panchamrit touched her lips, the poison vanished, and it transformed into pure divine nectar.
✨ Such is the power of true bhakti. In the face of plots, poison, and death itself, Meera’s love for Krishna turned every trap into a miracle.
